In their previous match, against Scotland in Group A, the Swiss nearly got themselves in a heap of trouble, allowing Scotland to get ahead 1-0 with a painful own goal by Schär. It took a remarkable strike from the inimitable Xherdan Shaqiri to equalize, and a lot of defensive high-alert football to hold on to that 1 point.
1-1 was not the result Switzerland had hoped for, but with now 4 points in total, it can be realistic about nabbing at least the second place in Group A. Even a defeat wouldn’t necessarily spell disaster, but we can expect the Swiss to give it their all.
Germany, of course, won twice (5-1 to Scotland and 2-0 to Hungary), so the host nation is set to win its Group A. All but a defeat at the hands of Switzerland here could stop the Germans from heading into the knockout rounds from a pole position. So far, Germany has made a stunning impression.
It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which it loses to a Swiss side that can’t bring the same consistent high-quality football at such a relentless pace for over 90 minutes. The Germans will make it a matter of honour to string together nothing but victories from here on.
Switzerland will be going all out in a desperate bid to top the group, and to do that they need to win. As tournament organizer, Germany won’t just grant them that honour hands down, of course. Tip: Germany to win while both teams score could be worth your while, at odds of 3.25.
Scotland made it to EURO 2024, only to find itself arranged in Group A with host nation Germany. In the inaugural game on Friday, 14 June, the Germans thrashed the Scots: 5-1, as the law of jungle dictates. Their 19 June performance against Switzerland was more indicative of what the Scots are actually capable of.
It should be noted that even though they have 2 goals so far, both of them were own goals. Despite just having 1 point, their 19 June 1-1 result against Switzerland is a tenuous lifeline. It will take Scotland the victory of a lifetime to push through.
Having lost both of its games so far (1-3 against Switzerland and 2-0 against Germany), Hungary’s chances of making it to the next round are slim to none. By beating Scotland in its last group phase game in Group A, Hungary can become third, but from that position, it would need a formidable goal difference to become one of the 4 best thirds.
With only a single goal in the tournament so far, and now facing a Scottish side that sees a better chance at moving on, that’s not very likely. The Hungarians will not go down without a fight, as they’ve shown before, though.
Tension will rise sky-high, as we all know: the best 4 third-placed teams will qualify, and both teams have no choice but to win by scoring lots of goals, because at the moment they both have a very negative goal average. This match must be open, because even if Scotland win, their 4 points may not be enough. Goalfest in the making? Try ‘Total goals: Over 4.5’ with odds of 4.50!
