Slovakia are becoming regulars at the European Championship, making their third appearance after 2016 in France and 2020. In both cases, Slovakia failed to qualify: they were eliminated in the last 8 in 2016, while in 2020 they didn't even make it past the group stages. That said, the Slovaks have the resources and even finished 2nd in their group, behind Portugal.

That's no mean feat. In the friendly matches last March, Slovakia suffered a home defeat against Austria (0-2) and a draw in Norway (1-1). During the preparatory phases in June, confidence seemed to have returned with a victory over San Marino (4-0) and then against Wales (4-0). Clearly, the team's solidity is intact, as demonstrated by their victory on Monday over Belgium, who started as favourites (1-0).

Ukraine have found it difficult to reach Euro 2024. It has to be said that Zbirna had the misfortune to fall into a first-rate elimination group that included England and Italy. The Ukrainians ended up 3rd in the group, ahead of Northern Macedonia and Malta. It was during the play-offs that the team was able to validate its ticket for the Euro by beating Bosnia-Herzegovina on the wire - 2 goals in quick succession with 10 minutes to go.

But Ukraine then had a scare against Iceland, with a game that was not very convincing. The team did manage to hold off Germany in early June (0-0), which was not bad, but lost to France and Poland. Ukraine's debut at Euro 2024 therefore lacked substance, an impression confirmed by their 3-0 defeat by Romania.

⚽ Conclusion and betting tips

Slovakia stunned Belgium for the first true upset of the tournament (0-1). The Slovaks will surely use this boost of confidence to try and overpower Ukraine. Despite the odds, they might have a shot, too: Ukraine gave a poor performance against Romania (3-0). With so much at stake now, it's obvious that Ukraine will rise above to get the victory that they need. Tip: 'Total goals: Under 1.5' at odds of 3.10.

Poland vs Austria

Poland got their Euro campaign off to a poor start with a 1-2 defeat by the Netherlands on Sunday. The Poles played intelligently, but were unable to save the team, who are already on the ropes as another defeat would prevent them from reaching the last eight.

And yet Poland were off to a good start. In the play-offs, the Eagles recorded a fine victory over Estonia (5-1) and a draw with Wales (0-0). Poland also won their warm-up matches against Ukraine (3-1) and Turkey (2-1).

This is only Austria's 4th appearance at the UEFA EURO, and it is worth recalling their excellent showing in 2020 (played in 2021), when they reached the quarter-finals. Austria finished 2nd in their group, just one point behind Belgium. In the end, "Das Team" only conceded one defeat.

They were very convincing in their final matches, beating Estonia (0-2) and Germany (2-0), then Slovakia (0-2) and Turkey (6-1). The Austrians, on the other hand, came up against Serbia. So the team is off to a good start, even if it lost to France on Monday (1-0), who are admittedly one of the big favourites in the competition.

  • Austria vs Poland (09/10/2004): 1-3

Goals for/against (last 10 matches)

  • Poland: 17/9
  • Austria: 21/8

Key players

  • Poland: Robert Lewandowski (forward, Barcelona), Wojciech Szczesny (goalkeeper, Juventus), Piotr Zielinski (midfielder, Napoli).
  • Austria: Marcel Sabitzer (midfielder, Borussia Dortmund), Marko Arnautović (striker, Inter Milan), Konrad Laimer (midfielder, Bayern Munich).

⚽ Conclusion and betting tips

Both Poland (1-2 against the Netherlands) and Austria (0-1 against France) lost their opening games. That happened, especially in the case of Austria, against better teams. It is now crucial for both countries to go for a resounding win: anything less might just as well cost them the tournament. Maybe try for a draw at odds of 3.50.

Absent from Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, the Netherlands are making a comeback on the international stage. This is the result of a skilfully balanced generational mix that is, quite frankly, working. At the 2022 World Cup, the "Oranje" were eliminated on penalties after a match that will go down in history against Argentina on their way to a world title.

The Netherlands qualified for Euro 2024 with ease, finishing behind France but ahead of Greece. In friendly matches, the Netherlands played the Scots, but lost to the Germans. They also won against Canada (4-0) and Iceland (4-0). Confidence is back in the Dutch camp, with a 2-1 win over Poland in their opening game of the Euros.

The French team, world champions in 2018, need no introduction. That said, their last Euro campaign was less brilliant, with Les Bleus being eliminated in the Round of 8 against Switzerland. Astonishing. But that's the law of sport. Since then, France have made up for lost time by winning the Nations League and reaching the final of the 2022 World Cup. The team led by Didier Deschamps finished top of their group ahead of the Netherlands, Greece, Ireland and Gibraltar, with 7 wins and 1 draw from 8 games.

Earlier in the friendly matches, however, Les Bleus were beaten 2-0 by Germany before an unconvincing 3-2 win over Chile. The French then dominated Luxembourg (3-0), but came up short against Canada (0-0). France are clearly among the favourites. They have just beaten Austria (1-0).

  • Netherlands: 26/6

  • France: Kylian Mbappé (striker, Real Madrid), Antoine Griezmann (midfielder, Atlético Madrid), Olivier Giroud (striker, AC Milan).

⚽ Conclusion and betting tips

This is an interesting duel, from a Belgian perspective, of course: our neighbours from the south versus our neighbours from the north. On paper, France is the favourite, of course. It remains to be seen in what form Kylian Mbappé will be after breaking his nose. Regardless, a victory for the Netherlands would be a remarkable feat.
