Slovakia managed to pull the first stunt of EURO 2024, stunning Belgium in a 0-1 victory. The Slovaks didn’t manage to become a true tournament revelation, since they lost their second game, when Ukraine beat them 1-2. Their commendable performance so far has earned them a third place (based on goal difference) in a group where every team has 3 points.

That means that it’s everyone’s game in Group E, and Slovakia knows. A victory in its last game always means that it plays in the round of 16, maybe even as surprise group winner. Even a draw wouldn’t spell disaster: it’d put Slovakia in third place. Its inspiring play has a remarkable statistic: with Ivan Schranz, Slovakia also has an unlikely top scorer. Count on it that he’ll want to get on the score sheet again.

Romania, not considered to be the most high-flying squad of the tournament or even its Group E, proved the world wrong with an emphatic victory against Ukraine (3-0). Taking the scalp of Belgium in the second game proved a little too tall of an order: we sent the Romanians back to the drawing board with a clear 2-0. Regardless, Romania leads Group E on goal difference.

As is the case for their opponent on this day, anything but a defeat is enough to gain access to the knockout rounds. Likewise, the Romanians could become group winner, depending on results elsewhere. They won’t want to count on any of that, of course. A victory is what they need, and nothing less than a victory is what they’ll aim for. But that’s also Slovakia’s plan…

⚽ Statistics and key information

Goals for/against (last 10 matches)

  • Slovakia: 20/11
  • Romania: 13/7

Key players

  • Romania: Horațiu Moldovan (goalkeeper, Atlético Madrid), Radu Drăgușin (defender, Tottenham), George Pușcaș (striker, Bari).

⚽ Conclusion and betting tips

The Romanians attack well and find themselves up against an opponent that likes to defend. This match will be tense, and every space left by Slovakia could be a great Romanian opportunity. However, we will have to be very careful with Slovakian counterattacks, one could be enough: remember Belgium? Tip: Slovakia wins by 1 goal is a value bet at odds of 4.75.

Ukraine vs Belgium

Ukraine was tipped as a squad to pay attention to in Group E, but it slipped and fell flat against Romania in its first game in Group E: 3-0. The rough wake-up call did result in a better second game. Playing against devil-slayer Slovakia, the Ukrainians escaped with the victory from behind: 1-2. As everyone else in their Group E, the Ukrainians have 3 points from a win and a loss.

Unfortunately for them, they have the lowest goal difference, so despite it all, they have to fight for knockout round qualification from a fourth place. It’s not off the table, though: Ukraine can end up in any place in the ranking. For that, a resounding victory is needed against the strongest team of the group. Ukraine will be hoping for another stellar performance by man-in-form Mykalo Shaparenko (1 goal and 1 assist against Slovakia).

Belgium was happy with its draw in Group E, meeting nothing but doable opponents. That was until a rookie mistake by Jérémy Doku resulted in the only goal by Slovakia in Belgium’s first game: 0-1. The Belgians weren’t too fazed, though, and rebounded nicely in the second game: 2-0 against Romania. That puts the tally so far at 3 points, and a preliminary second place.

It has to be said: Belgium has had its share of bad luck. Romelu Lukaku saw 2 goals disallowed against Slovakia, and another against Romania. Still, Belgium’s consistent performance in the game against Romania points to a healthy attitude of confidence. Of course, only a victory – with a Lukaku goal? – will do, as Belgium needs to prove that it belongs with the cream of the crop.

⚽ Statistics and key information

Goals for/against (last 10 matches)

  • Ukraine: 16/10
  • Belgium: 19/6

Key players

  • Ukraine: Andriy Lunin (goalkeeper, Real Madrid), Oleksandr Zinchenko (midfielder, Arsenal), Andriy Yarmolenko (midfielder, Dynamo Kyiv).
  • Belgium: Kevin De Bruyne (midfielder, Manchester City), Romelu Lukaku (forward, AS Roma), Jérémy Doku (forward, Manchester City).

⚽ Conclusion and betting tips

Both teams will be looking to win this match, as taking the lead in Group E means avoiding a face-off with France in the last 16. There will be plenty of space and goals in a game that both teams will approach with an open mind and all the guts that they can muster. An interesting bet to consider is ‘Both teams to score: Yes & Total goals: Over +2.5’, with odds of 2.10.

Georgia vs Portugal

Despite this EURO 2024 being Georgia’s first appearance on this level of the European football scene, the Caucasus country has shown that it can bring fascinating football to the pitch. Despite the best Georgian efforts, the 3-1 defeat against Turkey was, in the end, only logical. It’s all the more to the credit of the Georgians and their spirit that they drew Czechia 1-1.

That’s just a single point from 2 games so far. If Georgia wins its upcoming game, it can qualify for the knockout rounds as second-best in its Group F, although it’d need help from other results in its group. The Georgians have charmed with 2 goals so far, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will once more be the man to look out for in the Georgian selection.

Portugal is another country that is shortlisted as a favourite for the title that it’s won before, in 2016. With 2 victories out of 2 games already (2-1 against Czechia and 0-3 against Turkey), Portugal is on a roll. The Portuguese are therefore guaranteed to move on to the round of 16. Whether or not the Portuguese will appear there as group winners is all but certain: their results so far make it very unlikely for any other nation in their group to get past them.

Cristiano Ronaldo is still waiting to add more goals to his international record, but last time around, he was atypically selfless and offered teammate Bruno Fernandes a goal he could’ve just as easily made himself. CR7 is still in line to open his account at EURO 2024, and he won’t hold back despite already knowing that he has at least one more game to play in the next round.

⚽ Statistics and key information

Goals for/against (last 10 matches)

  • Georgia: 23/12
  • Portugal: 25/7

Key players

  • Georgia: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (forward, Napoli), Georges Mikautadze (forward, Metz), Giorgi Mamardashvili (goalkeeper, Valencia).
  • Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo (forward, Al-Nassr), João Félix (forward, Barcelona), Rúben Dias (defender, Manchester City).

⚽ Conclusion and betting tips

Ronaldo has yet to score and will be facing what is, at least on paper, the weakest team in Group F. It's all but impossible for him not to get on the score sheet now. Why not go a little overboard? He could make two goals even, if he’s given the chance! Ronaldo to score 2 goals is worth a shot for a bet, at odds of 3.50.

Czechia vs Turkey

Despite losing to Portugal (2-1) and dr awing against first-timer Georgia (1-1), Czechia heads into its last group phase game knowing that it still has a shot at making it to the next round. The Czechs will have to give it their all, though: only by beating their next opponent can they keep their chances alive. Even so, they need to consider the other result in their group.

Not that that’s something that will occupy the minds of those on the field, though. Indeed, single-minded focus will be crucial here. Czechia will count on inspired forward action from the likes of Patrik Schick, who’s now the all-time record holder of most international goals for his nation. One more sure wouldn’t hurt, is what all of Czechia is thinking.

With Turkey, the opposition for this final game in Group F is fierce, though. The Turkish selection opened strong, setting aside Georgia on a 3-1 score line. Turkey will hold less joyful memories from its game against Portugal, which ended in a 0-3 defeat. Still, Turkey is in second place, and is still master of its own destination. Winning against Czechia would mean that the Turks can pocket their ticket to the round of 16 with confidence.

After all, Turkey has found a way to the net 3 times before. The goal by young offensive midfielder Arda Güler (still only 19) comes to mind, and all of Turkey will be looking forward to another fantastic performance from “Turkish Messi”. Turkey will need more than young star power to hold its own against a Czech side that will be all the more ravenous for the win…

⚽ Statistics and key information

Recent fixtures (last 5 matches)

  • Turkey vs Czechia (19/11/2022): 2-1
  • Czechia vs Turkey (21/06/2016): 0-2
  • Czechia vs Turkey (10/10/2015): 0-2
  • Turkey vs Czechia (10/10/2014): 1-2
  • Turkey vs Czechia (06/02/2013): 0-2

Goals for/against (last 10 matches)

  • Czechia: 17/10
  • Turkey: 14/13

Key players

  • Czechia: Patrik Schick (forward, Bayer Leverkusen), Vladimír Coufal (defender, West Ham), Tomáš Souček (midfielder, West Ham).
  • Turkey: Hakan Çalhanoğlu (midfielder, Inter Milan), Arda Güler (forward, Real Madrid), Salih Özcan (midfielder, Borussia Dortmund).

⚽ Conclusion and betting tips

The Turks are as strong offensively as they are weak defensively. Against an opponent that is this eager to advance to the elimination phase, there is zero room for error on the Turkish side. Another own goal after a painful fumble in the heart of the defence would be absolutely horrible. Maybe Czechia to win from behind could prove a smart bet, with odds of 9.70.
