In an entertaining game, the Slovenes kept the Portuguese as busy as vice versa. It led to the first penalty shootout of the tournament, after overtime didn’t provide a winner either. In that shootout, Porto goalie Costa was the clear hero: he stopped no less than 3 penalty kicks. All of Portugal’s went in, including one by Ronaldo.

The Portuguese star and all-time world record holder for international goals hasn’t made a field goal so far, though. It should be high on his to-do list, knowing his relentless drive. Leaving the tournament without a goal would feel like failure to him. He has at least another 90 minutes in Portugal’s upcoming quarterfinal game. Can he make his 131st international goal here?

That will depend on France, of course. In the round of 16 game against Belgium, France’s goalkeeper Maignan kept his country in the game with a split-second reflex. An own goal 85 minutes into the game made it 1-0, and France was content defending that narrow lead. Man of the match Koundé was always a hazard to the defence, and Kanté, too, was once more one of the best men on the pitch. They’ll need to give it their all if they want to see the next round…
