Azerbaijan F1 Grand Prix 2024: who will rule the streets of Baku?

10 September 2024

In the weekend of 13-15 September, Baku is back with its fast straights, tight corners, and endless surprises. With McLaren on fire, Red Bull no longer unbeatable for a couple of races now, and Leclerc fresh from his Monza win, the question is: who’s taking the win of this Formula 1 GP? Here’s a quick look at our top 5 contenders.

Don’t forget to check the odds and take your pick(s)!

Lando Norris

McLaren’s golden boy is riding high after a string of strong performances, and the streets of Baku could be his next playground. McLaren’s current speed and Norris’ cool, calculated driving style make him a top pick for the win. If he can keep his head through Baku’s notorious twists and turns, don’t be surprised if he takes the top step on the podium.

Oscar Piastri

Hot on Norris’ heels is McLaren’s rising star, Oscar Piastri. The youngster has been impressing everyone with his rapid adaptation to F1 and is more than capable of pulling off a surprise win in Azerbaijan. If the team gives him a solid car, and if he avoids any mistakes, Piastri could make his mark with a standout performance in Baku.

Charles Leclerc

Fresh off a sensational win at Monza, Charles Leclerc is bringing his momentum to Baku. Ferrari’s straight-line speed will be a major weapon on the long straights of this circuit, and Leclerc’s confidence is sky-high. If Ferrari can avoid any strategic blunders (yes, still a big IF), Leclerc could easily find himself back on the top step again.

Max Verstappen

It’s rare to see Max Verstappen outside of the winner’s circle, but recent races have shown that Red Bull’s dominance is cracking since the RB20 has issues the engineers and the drivers can’t wrap their heads around. Still, Max is never one to be counted out. If Red Bull can rediscover their early-season pace, Verstappen could still make Baku his own. But right now, he’s no longer the sure thing he once was.

Carlos Sainz, Jr.

Carlos Sainz, Jr. might not always be the headline act, but the Ferrari driver is quietly consistent. With a car that’s been improving and Sainz’s ability to keep his cool, he’s definitely in with a shot. Baku rewards drivers who stay out of trouble, and Sainz is just the man to play the long game and capitalize on any chaos up front.

With McLaren’s form peaking and Ferrari finding its feet, this race is shaping up to be a real thriller. So get ready for some high-speed action on 15 September from 1.00 pm!
