Croatia is often underestimated in major competitions. It's a shame, because it deserves better, and it have proved its worth. That's no small feat. The team can therefore go a long way. In the qualifiers, the Croatians finished 2nd in their group, behind Turkey, with wins over Latvia (0-2) and Armenia (1-0).

Earlier in friendly matches, they drew with Tunisia (0-0), but dominated Egypt (2-4). At the beginning of June, Croatia logically beat Northern Macedonia (3-0), but also Portugal (1-2), proof that their resources are there, even if the team's stars are ageing. On Saturday, Croatia were soundly beaten by Spain (0-3), but they should still have an advantage over Albania.

Albania are taking part in the European Championship for only the second time in its history. It has never been selected for the World Cup. Nonetheless, Albania dominated its group during the qualifiers, taking 1st place ahead of the Czech Republic, Poland, Moldova and the Faroe Islands. Its record: 4 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat in 8 matches.

So they are clearly one of the favourites, especially as they are playing on home soil. That said, the Mannschaft have had a rough time: they were eliminated in the first round of the World Cup in Russia in 2018 and in Qatar in 2022, and they were beaten in the last 16 of EURO 2020 by England.

That disappointment led to a change of coach, and Julian Nagelsmann is now in charge of the team, seemingly breathing new life into it. Nevertheless, Germany were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Ukraine in June. It remains to be seen whether Germany can regain full confidence in their game. They did just that in their opening match, with a comprehensive 5-1 win over Scotland.

Hungary are clearly outsiders in this competition. Hungary will be looking to spring a surprise, and to do so they can count on a well-organised team and some excellent individual talent. The aim is to go further than before. In 2016, Trikolór reached the last 16 after beating Portugal and Austria.

And in 2020, they put up surprising resistance against Portugal, France and Germany. Even so, they were eliminated in the group stage. On Saturday, Hungary also lost their opening match against Switzerland (1-3).

In the qualifiers, the Scots finished 2nd in a rather complex group that included the likes of Spain and Norway, as well as Georgia and Cyprus. A victory over Spain was a sign of their fine tuning.

That said, the rest of the qualification process was more painful. Scotland did not shine in the friendlies, losing to the Netherlands (4-0) and Northern Ireland (0-1). Their confidence could also be shaken by the 5-1 defeat they suffered in the opening match against Germany. Scotland suffered severely against Germany in their EURO opener (5-1).

Switzerland are considered outsiders at international football tournaments. Because it regularly surprises. In 2021 (EURO), the Swiss eliminated France on penalties before being knocked out by Spain in the quarter-finals. In 2024, the Swiss finished 2nd in their group, behind Romania and ahead of Israel.
