The Belgian Grand Prix Formula 1: a homecoming showdown

25 July 2024

Get ready, motorsport fans, because the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps is just around the corner – and it’s set to be a thrilling spectacle! This legendary track, nestled in the heart of the Ardennes forest, is a favourite among drivers and spectators alike. With its sweeping curves, daunting elevation changes, and infamous weather, Spa is the perfect setting for some high-speed drama. Which could be even more exciting, because you can win your own Grand Prix too with our F1 promo, only available at Golden Palace Sports!

Spa-Francorchamps, the driver's playground

Spa-Francorchamps a track that embodies the essence of Formula 1. It’s revered for its long straights and challenging corners, including the legendary Eau Rouge/Raidillon. Spa is a track where drivers can truly showcase their skills – it’s like Disneyland for petrolheads. The combination of history, speed, and the ever-present chance of rain makes it a race that everyone looks forward to. The circuit’s unpredictable weather often means a dry track at one end and torrential rain at the other, keeping teams and drivers on their toes, and fans glued to their seats.

A sort of homecoming

For Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, the Belgian GP is more than just another race; it’s a bit of a homecoming. Both drivers have Belgian mothers, making Spa their semi-home turf. Verstappen, the reigning champion, will be eager to dominate on a circuit that feels like home, while Norris, fresh off a (rather forced) second place performance in Hungary, will be looking to continue his momentum and perhaps even snag a win.

Red Bull vs. McLaren vs. Ferrari vs. Mercedes – The Battle of the titans

The Hungarian GP saw McLaren pull off an incredible 1-2 finish, shaking up the championship battle a bit more. Lando Norris and his teammate left everyone, including Red Bull, in their dust. If McLaren can keep this up, they might just be THE force to reckon with in Belgium.

Red Bull remains the team to beat, despite Verstappen’s worries about the car. Verstappen is still in phenomenal form, even though he fought a frustrating battle on the Hungary track (and over the team radio). But the pressure is on to maintain his dominance – which he has lost over the past races. With McLaren showing newfound speed and Ferrari always lurking with their prancing horses, it’s shaping up to be a race where anything can happen.

Ferrari has had a rollercoaster season, mixing moments of brilliance with bouts of head-scratching strategy calls. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are both capable of pulling off a surprise, and Spa could be the place where the Scuderia finally puts it all together.

And then there’s Mercedes. After a slow start to the season, they’re getting stronger with every race. Just look at Lewis Hamilton’s third place in Hungary. Both him and and George Russell are hungry for victories, and with recent upgrades to their car, they could very well spoil the party for Red Bull and McLaren.

What do we expect?

Given McLaren’s recent form, another strong performance could be on the cards. Don’t be surprised if Lando Norris and/or his teammate finds themselves on the podium again. However, Max Verstappen’s consistency and skill, particularly at Spa, still make him the favourite. If he can channel his anger to driving, fend off the McLaren charge and keep Ferrari and Mercedes at bay, Red Bull could be celebrating another victory.

But this is Spa, and if there’s one thing we know, it’s to expect the unexpected. The mix of high-speed straights, tight corners, and unpredictable weather means we could see a surprise winner or a dramatic twist at any moment.

A race to remember

The Belgian Grand Prix is set to be a classic, with all the ingredients for a high-octane thriller. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a casual viewer, this is one race you won’t want to miss. And it will be even more thrilling with our F1 promo, which might result in winning your own Grand Prix!
