France was named “one to watch” before the tournament; after all, the French have won the tournament twice before, in 1984 and again in 2000. So far, though, les Bleus have failed to impress. They’ve won a single group match game (0-1 against Austria), and drew their others. A drab 0-0 draw against the Netherlands and 1-1 against already-eliminated Poland meant that the French, clearly looking for their best form, only finished second in Group D.
Sure, Mbappé was out with a broken nose. But can that really explain France’s altogether ailing form? The talent, the power, the intelligence, the will: it’s all there somewhere, and if they manage to bring that all to the pitch as a coherent team, then les Bleus might have a shot at another trophy. They should take it step by step, though, starting with Belgium. France’s neighbour from the north, too, qualified after mixed results, to say the least…
It’s back to the drawing board with a football hangover for Belgium. First against Slovakia (0-1), Belgium played decent enough, but lacked goal efficiency. The 2-0 win against Romania showed improvement, with a Belgium that knows what it’s doing. The painfully bleak goalless draw against Ukraine threw all chances to end up in the “easy” bracket right out the window. Only a world-class performance from De Bruyne, Lukaku, and really everyone else, will do here.
And so the rivalry continues… After forcing Belgium off the stage multiple times, France will think that it knows what to do. Mbappé is sure to get his goal in. On the other hand, we can only hope that Belgium has a solid plan to finally beat France when it matters the most. KDB will be super motivated to prove himself. Tip: bet on both Mbappé and De Bruyne to score with odds of 15.00!
Portugal showed all intentions to win its Group F. The squad, led by former Belgium coach Martinez, won its first two group games convincingly. The first game, Portugal vs Czechia, ended 2-1 as the Portuguese were looking for the right tournament pace. They found it in their second game, where they beat Turkey 0-3. No one could predict that, of all opponents, Georgia was going to be the team to beat Portugal (2-0), but infamously, that’s how it went.
Regardless of that awkward defeat, Portugal finished first in its group, ahead of Turkey, Georgia, and Czechia respectively. It’s telling that Ronaldo has yet to score, 3 games into the tournament. He might very well have to do it here, if he wants his country to carry on. If he wants to do so, he’ll need to get past Jan Oblak, goalie for Slovenia, one of the tournament revelations. The Slovenes managed to cling on to one of the third places that allowed passage to the round of 16.
It wasn’t all without merit, either. In a strong group that included England (0-0), Denmark (1-1), and Serbia (1-1), Slovenia managed to play 3 draws: the same result that second-placed Denmark got. In fact, it was a last-minute Serbia goal that cost Slovenia a higher place. Because of that, the Slovenes face their greatest foe so far: Portugal. Keep in mind: both Slovenian goals were made by defensive players (Erik Janža against Denmark and Žan Karničnik against Serbia)…
After its unexpected defeat at the hands of Georgia, Portugal has to show its teeth. It’s a must for the Portuguese to bounce back in style, as they’re facing a feasible foe. Count on the Portuguese to be up to the challenge! A bet worth your while could be a -1.5 handicap win for Portugal (meaning that Portugal wins, despite having a virtual handicap op over 1.5 goals conceded).
