Romania was a surprise package in the previous qualifying rounds. Indeed, it was thought that its team would finish behind Switzerland. This was not the case, however, and Romania came out on top, leaving the Swiss in second place, ahead of Kosovo, Andorra and Belarus. What's more, Romania remained unbeaten in Group I, a feat that puts it on a par with much more prestigious teams such as France, Portugal, England, Hungary and Belgium.
It was a very fine – and unexpected – start, given that in 2016 Romania was knocked out at the very start of the competition. The team's good form now seems to mean that a place in the last 16 of the Euros is within its grasp for the first time.
But all this is conditional, because we can’t forget that at the start of the preparations, the team drew at home with Northern Ireland (1-1) and lost to Colombia (2-3). They also failed to win against Bulgaria or modest Liechtenstein (both 0-0). Which begs the question.
Ukraine has encountered numerous difficulties in its bid to reach Euro 2024. But it has to be said that it fell into a particularly tough qualifying group with England and Italy. Ukraine took 3rd place, ahead of Northern Macedonia. In the play-offs, Ukraine also narrowly beat Bosnia-Herzegovina and almost lost out to Iceland. So far, their progress remains fragile.
The match promises to be lively, as there have always been at least two goals scored in previous games between the two teams. Romania remains unbeaten in the qualifiers. That counts for something, of course, but Romania's failings against Bulgaria and, even more so, tiny Liechtenstein are not reassuring either.
Ukraine's current 3rd place finish should therefore be put into perspective, as they were up against the big boys, England and Italy. Ukraine is therefore more confident, so a Ukrainian victory seems a good idea at odds of 2.05.
We may be Belgian, but we have to keep a cool head and base our decisions on the facts before betting everything on our national team. We simply hope that our national team does not go through the same ordeal as it did at the World Cup in Qatar. It has to be said that the Belgian team has yet to demonstrate its consistency with the departure of several players, including the excellent Eden Hazard. Anticipation is therefore high for this Belgium at the European Championship, and it is at the end of the tournament that the Belgians will (or won’t) confirm their abilities.
Since the World Cup in Qatar, Belgium have not lost a single match, including in the knockout stages. The record is simply excellent: 6 wins and 2 draws. Recently, Belgium also drew two friendly matches against Ireland (0-0) and England (2-2). The Belgians also won against Montenegro (2-0) and Luxembourg (3-0).
Slovakia is taking part in the European Championship for the third time (after 2016 and 2020). In 2016, the country reached the last eight, but in 2020, was eliminated at the group stage in 2020. Slovakia did well, finishing 2nd in its group behind Portugal.
The team therefore seems to be in good shape, even if it was less convincing in its two friendlies: a home defeat by Austria (0-2) and a draw in Norway (1-1). The warm-up matches were better, with wins over San Marino (4-0) and Wales (4-0). The team has therefore regained some confidence.
After the resounding failure in Qatar, Belgium must once again prove the worth of its team. Slovakia seems to be on a positive trend, having only lost to Portugal.
Naturally, Belgium will be able to count on Romelu Lukaku, the top scorer in Euro qualifying. As a result, Belgium seems to have what it takes to win. A good idea is 'Total goals : More than 3.5' at 2.71.
This will be Austria's 4th appearance at the UEFA EURO. In 2020, the team put in a fine performance by reaching the last 8. However, the Austrians lost out in extra time to Italy, which went on to become champions. Austria finished second in their group, behind Belgium but ahead of Sweden. Brilliant.
"Das Team" only conceded one defeat, to Belgium (2-3). That gives a total of 6 wins and 1 draw. Austria has been convincing in their most recent matches, beating Estonia (0-2), Germany (2-0), Slovakia (0-2) and Turkey (6-1). Only one match was more difficult: the one against Serbia (2-1). So confidence is high.
While France is recognised as a very strong team, it should not be forgotten that it lost out to Switzerland in the Round of 16 at the last UEFA European Championship after a penalty shoot-out that proved fateful for the French. Since then, of course, Les Bleus have bounced back, winning the Nations League and reaching the final of the World Cup in 2022 (after losing to Argentina on penalties).
But France is still at the top of its game and finished top of its group in the qualifiers for Euro 2024, ahead of the Netherlands, Greece, Ireland and Gibraltar, with 7 wins and a draw from 8 matches. However, Les Bleus also gave a scare with a 2-0 defeat by Germany in March and a narrow 3-2 win over Chile. France also stumbled against Canada in a friendly (0-0). Les Bleus have been in mixed form, to say the least.
Historically, France has always dominated Austria and Les Bleus are once again among the tournament favourites. But it is clear that both teams will want to give their all in this match from the outset.
France in particular has no room for error, which complicates matters. Nevertheless, the French remain the favourites. Bet to consider: 1X2 win for France at 1.50.
