Albania is already somewhat of a revelation in this EURO 2024. For a nation that can’t sport a star-studded cast, Albania has performed commendably so far. In their first group game of what is only their second European football championship, the Albanians scored against Italy, though they ultimately lost 2-1.

Maybe more impressively, Albania managed to draw 2-2 against Croatia. An early goal from Qazim Laçi and another goal late into overtime by Klaus Gjasula is what’s now keeping Albania’s hopes alive to reach the knockout rounds for the first time ever. With just 1 point in their Group B; and now scary-good Spain before them, the Albanians face an uphill battle…

Spain, meanwhile, has everything that Albania hasn’t. The Spanish linked 2 convincing victories against the stronger opponents in their Group B (3-0 against Croatia, 1-0 against Italy). They have a world-class starting eleven, with Nico Williams showing his eagerness, and Lamine Yamal just itching to break those “youngest player to” records. Most important of all: they booked their ticket to the knockout rounds.

If Spain continues to perform as it has done in its past two games, then there’s little doubt for the remarkably in-form squad to finish their group phase as winners. As always in such a situation, Spain’s worst enemy will be itself. Albania will definitely be looking to exploit the slightest shift in Spanish focus to make a dent in La Roja’s ambitions.

Croatia vs Italy

• Where: Leipzig

2 games into EURO 2024, Croatia can’t be too excited about its outlook. Poor performances against Spain (a 3-0 defeat) and Albania (a 2-2 draw, which needed an own goal from Albania, even), is not where Croatia had hoped to be. Winning against Italy is the Croatians only hope to avoid a rather embarrassing group stage exit.

It’s not that the talent isn’t there. With Luka Modrić, Croatia still has a brilliant midfield strategist, and Lovro Majer has shown that he’s more than willing to make his mark. So far, though, it’s all been to little avail. It’s clear that Croatia will have to reinvent itself, if it wants a shot at the next round, but time is short, and solutions aren’t obvious...

Italy’s situation isn’t that much better. The EURO 2020 winner did win its first game against Albania (2-1), but lost its second to Spain (1-0), where star goalie Gigi Donnarumma prevented worse. At least in theory, a draw against Croatia would suffice, but the shock that Italy received from Spain will no doubt weigh heavy on the title defender’s mind.

The Italians will see it as a moral obligation to rise to the occasion and show all of Europe that yes, they’re still alive and kicking, and ready to take on anyone in the knockout rounds. Mental resilience will be crucial here. If Italy manages to get in the zone on time for the kick-off, then sparks could fly here!
