Still quite surprisingly, Gareth Southgate has announced to step down as England's national football team manager. Southgate has been a pivotal figure in revitalizing English football, steering the team to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the finals of EURO 2020 and 2024. His tenure, marked by a blend of strategic acumen and a calm demeanor, has seen England re-emerge as a competitive force on the international stage.
Southgate cited a combination of personal reasons and the need for new energy and ideas as the driving forces behind his decision. "It's been an incredible journey, but I believe it's the right time for someone else to take this team forward," Southgate stated in his resignation announcement. His departure leaves a significant void in the England setup, prompting speculation about who will succeed him.
Through the grapevine we’ve heard a couple of potential candidates to be Southgate’s successor. And some of them are quite interesting, we think. Check out our ideal candidates below here. Who do you think would be the right person to finally ‘bring football home’ again?
Current role: Former Chelsea Manager
Why suitable: Known for his innovative and progressive approach to football, Potter has demonstrated his ability to develop young talent and implement a dynamic style of play. His experience with Brighton and Chelsea in the Premier League highlights his capability to manage at the highest level, making him a strong candidate to build on Southgate's foundation.
Current role: Newcastle United Manager
Why suitable: Howe has garnered acclaim for his impressive work at Newcastle, transforming the team into a competitive outfit in the Premier League. His emphasis on disciplined defending and effective attacking strategies could translate well to the international stage, offering a blend of tactical rigor and motivational skill.
Current role: Free agent
Why suitable: While not English, Pochettino's extensive experience in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, coupled with his ability to get the best out of his players, makes him an attractive option – especially since he’s ‘in between jobs’. His tactical flexibility and leadership skills could be exactly what England needs to take the next step in international competitions.
Current role: Free Agent
Why suitable: As a former England international with a deep understanding of the national setup, Lampard brings both passion and knowledge of the game. His managerial stints with Chelsea and Everton have shown his potential to inspire and lead, making him a sentimental yet potentially astute choice for the role.
Current role: Fenerbahce Manager
Why suitable: Mourinho is one of the most decorated managers in football, known for his tactical prowess and ability to win major trophies. His extensive experience in managing top clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United, gives him a wealth of knowledge about English football and the Premier League. Mourinho's ability to handle high-pressure situations and instill a winning mentality could be crucial for England as they aim for international success. Yes, he just recently started as Fenerbahce’s manager, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Mourinho would see the opportunity to become England’s manager as one he can’t miss.
Southgate's resignation marks the end of an era for England, opening up a new chapter for the national team. While his departure is met with mixed emotions, the focus now shifts to finding the right successor.
The candidates we named each bring unique qualities and visions, offering hope for a seamless transition and continued success for England on the international stage. If you ask us, José Mourinho would be our ‘Golden Pick’, as he stands out for his proven track record and tactical expertise, and yes, for his – let’s say – outspokenness as well, which England really could use.
But what do you think? Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen 😉
