Belgian basketball fans have every reason to be excited this NBA season. This excitement revolves around Ajay Mitchell on the one hand, and Toumani Camara on the other. This promising young forward, who hopes to be mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jordan and LeBron James some day, has just embarked on a new chapter in his career with the Portland Trail Blazers.
But who is Toumani Camara, and what makes him such a special prospect for Belgian and international basketball fans alike? Read all about it in our comprehensive article.
Born on May 8, 2000, in Brussels, Toumani Camara's basketball journey began in Belgium’s capital, where sports played an integral role in his upbringing. His father is from Guinea, and his mother is Belgian, giving Toumani a diverse cultural background that has shaped his personality both on and off the court. Growing up, he was a passionate basketball fan, and like many aspiring young players, he looked up to NBA stars, dreaming of one day playing in the world’s most elite basketball league.
Toumani’s natural athleticism and dedication to the game were evident early on, leading him to join local basketball clubs in Brussels. His impressive performances quickly caught the attention of scouts, setting him on a path that would eventually take him beyond Belgium.
Although Belgium isn’t known for producing a long list of NBA talent, Toumani is a product of the country's growing basketball scene. He played for various youth teams in Belgium, where he honed his skills and developed into a versatile forward. But it was his decision to move to the United States that truly set his career in motion.
At the age of 16, he moved across the Atlantic to attend Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory in Florida. His high school basketball career flourished in the U.S., where he was exposed to a much more competitive level of play, preparing him for college basketball and eventually the NBA.
Toumani’s college basketball career began at the University of Georgia, where he played for two seasons (2019–2021). As a Bulldog, he quickly made a name for himself as a high-energy forward with a relentless work ethic. His defensive abilities, athleticism, and basketball IQ stood out, helping him secure a spot on NBA scouts’ radars. After two solid seasons in Georgia, he transferred to the University of Dayton, where he continued to evolve as a player, further showcasing his versatility.
During his time at Dayton (2021–2023), Toumani averaged 10.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, earning him recognition in the Atlantic 10 Conference. His performance at Dayton solidified his status as a legitimate NBA prospect, leading to his eventual selection in the 2023 NBA Draft.
In the 2023 NBA Draft, he was selected by the Phoenix Suns with the 52nd overall pick, a testament to his hard work and potential. However, in a strategic move during the off-season, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers, where he now looks to make his mark in the league.
Portland is known for developing young talent, and Toumani fits perfectly into their rebuild. Standing at 6’8" (203 cm) with a wingspan that makes him a menace on defense (7'0.5", or almost 215 cm), he brings a unique combination of size, speed, and agility. His ability to guard multiple positions, from the perimeter to the paint, makes him a valuable asset for the Trail Blazers.
But Toumani isn't just about defense. His offensive game has steadily improved over the years, particularly his ability to score in transition and his emerging three-point shot. While he may not be an instant star, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to carve out a long and successful NBA career.
Did you know?
Toumani is one of the few left-handed players in the NBA, which can give him an advantage on the court, especially when attacking the basket or shooting.
He is a fitness enthusiast, and his impressive physical condition has been a key part of his success and ability to compete at a high level.
Toumani loves music, especially Afrobeat and hip-hop music, which is his go-to for pre-game hype.
And cooking, experimenting with healthy recipes, often sharing his culinary creations on social media.
As Toumani begins his new season with the Portland Trail Blazers, the question on everyone’s mind is: what will his role be, and how far can he go? He started 49 games last season (out of the 70 he played), so he'll probably secure the starting role altogether.
With the 2024-2025 NBA season kicking off on October 22, all (Belgian) eyes will be on Toumani.
Toumani Camara represents the future of Belgian basketball, and his journey from Brussels to the NBA is nothing short of inspiring. There’s no doubt that he has the talent and drive to succeed. Whether you're a basketball fanatic or simply love following promising young talent, Toumani is a player you won’t want to miss this NBA season. Stay tuned to see how his career unfolds!
